Two lifters start the same hypertrophy block. One adds a set to his bench press every week like the internet told him to. The other tracks weekly sets per muscle group and deliberately ramps them across a six-week block. Eight weeks later, the first guy is sore, stalled, and sleeping badly. The second guy just hit three rep PRs in the same week — and he's about to back off on purpose. The difference isn't effort or genetics. It's that one of them is training inside a volume framework and the other is just adding weight and hoping.

MEV, MAV, and MRV Aren't Just Jargon

The three volume landmarks — minimum effective volume, maximum adaptive volume, and maximum recoverable volume — came out of Mike Israetel's work at Renaissance Periodization, built on hypertrophy dose-response research going back over a decade. MEV is the lowest weekly set count that still produces measurable muscle growth. Go below it and you're maintaining, not building. MAV is the sweet spot: the range of sets per week that produces the fastest gains relative to the fatigue cost. MRV is the ceiling — the most volume you can do in a week and still recover before the next session. Push past it and your next few sessions get worse, not better, no matter how much protein you eat or how well you sleep.

This is a different question from the one progressive overload answers. Progressive overload asks "am I adding more weight, reps, or difficulty over time?" It says nothing about how many total sets you're doing to get there. RPE and autoregulation ask "how hard should today's set feel?" — a session-by-session dial. Volume landmarks operate one level up: they set the weekly dose for an entire muscle group before you even walk into the gym, and they change slower, over a training block rather than a single workout. You can nail your RPE targets every session and still be sitting way above your recoverable volume for hamstrings, because RPE tells you nothing about how much total work you're stacking across the week.

What the Set Ranges Actually Look Like

Renaissance Periodization's published volume landmark charts, cross-referenced against Brad Schoenfeld's 2017 meta-regression on training volume and hypertrophy, give a workable starting map. Schoenfeld's analysis found that muscle groups trained with more than ten hard sets per week grew measurably more than those trained with fewer than five — the dose-response relationship is real, not marketing. Baz-Valle's 2022 systematic review added the important caveat: the curve flattens and can even reverse for some lifters once volume gets high enough that recovery can't keep pace.

  • Chest: MEV around 6 sets/week, MAV 12–20, MRV up to roughly 22
  • Back (rows and pulldowns combined): MEV around 8, MAV 14–22, MRV up to 25 for lifters with strong recovery
  • Quads: MEV around 6, MAV 12–18, MRV around 20
  • Hamstrings recover slower than almost any other muscle group and top out earlier — MEV around 4, MAV 6–10, MRV rarely above 16
  • Side delts: MEV around 6, MAV 16–22, MRV up to 26 — they tolerate an unusual amount of volume, which is why most men are chronically under-training them
  • Biceps and triceps: MEV 4–5, MAV 8–14, MRV 18–20

These numbers aren't gospel and they're not identical from one training methodology to the next — you'll see slightly different figures depending on which coach's chart you're reading, and none of them replace your own logbook. But the ranking between muscle groups holds up: hamstrings and calves cap out early, delts and back can absorb a lot more than most programs give them.

Why the Landmarks Move With Training Age

A lifter in his first year can often grow off eight to ten sets per week for a muscle group and would genuinely struggle to recover from the volume a five-year veteran uses as a baseline. Training age raises MRV because the neuromuscular system gets more efficient at producing force with less collateral damage — the same weight simply costs less tissue damage after years of exposure. Recovery capacity does the opposite job: poor sleep, a stressful job, a calorie deficit, or being over 40 all compress the ceiling regardless of how many years you've trained. A 45-year-old lifter cutting calories for a wedding in six weeks might have a real MRV for quads that's lower than a 24-year-old bulking on eight hours of sleep a night, even if the older lifter has a decade more training history.

This is the part most programs get wrong. They treat volume landmarks as fixed numbers you look up once and use forever. They're not. MRV in particular is a moving target that tracks your current life circumstances, and the honest way to find it is to push volume up until performance stalls, then back off — not to guess a number from a chart and defend it against evidence.

A Worked Example: Ramping a Six-Week Block

Take a lifter whose chest MEV sits at 6 sets per week and whose realistic MRV, based on last block's data, is around 20. A sensible ramp looks like this: week one at 8 sets, week two at 11, week three at 14, week four at 17, week five at 20, and week six either holding at 20 for one more pass or dropping back toward MEV if bar speed and rep quality have already started slipping. The point of the ramp isn't to arrive at MRV and live there — it's to spend most of the block inside the MAV range, where growth per set is highest, and only touch MRV briefly near the end, when fatigue is expected and planned for rather than accidental.

Run the same lifter straight at 20 sets from week one and the picture looks completely different by week three. Bar speed on the bench drops. The last two sets of each session start feeling like a completely different workout than the first two. Sleep gets choppier even though nothing else in his life changed. None of that is progressive overload failing — it's volume landmarks being ignored, and the fix isn't more discipline, it's fewer sets until the next block.

The Warning Signs You've Blown Past MRV

Your bench press doesn't lie to you, even when you want it to.

Exceeding MRV doesn't announce itself with a dramatic injury most of the time. It shows up as a slow accumulation that's easy to rationalise away individually and obvious in hindsight as a pattern.

Watch for a working weight that stalls or regresses across two consecutive sessions despite adequate sleep and food — that's the clearest single signal, and it's the one lifters ignore longest because it feels like a bad day rather than a systemic problem. Resting heart rate creeping up by five or more beats per minute over a week, joints that ache specifically during warm-up sets rather than during the working sets themselves, and a sudden drop in appetite are the next tier of signs. The subtlest one, and the one almost nobody tracks, is grip strength: a measurable drop in max grip on a dynamometer or even just a noticeably worse chalk-free hold on your last deadlift set often shows up before the bigger lifts do, because the nervous system telegraphs systemic fatigue through the smallest muscle groups first.

None of these signs individually means you need to stop training. Two or three showing up in the same week, on a program you deliberately ramped toward MRV, means the block has done its job and it's time to plan the drop back down — not push through on the theory that more is always better. That's the actual discipline volume landmarks require: knowing when the number you built the whole block around has already told you it's time to stop climbing.
